The park was founded to protect untouched nature and also includes 18 individual volcanoes. Seven of which have been active since 1900. The area was first designated as national park in 1980 and it is famous mostly for its volcanic eruption.

Typical residents in area are grizzly bears, also known as brown bears. We can found around 2000 individuals in this park. Apart from famous bears, you can also on webcam see moose, gray wolves, beavers, sea lions and otters.
