Ventana Wildlife Society Update September 1, 2020: We are waiting for firefighters to give us the green light to inspect four chicks in nests in the area of the Dolan fire. Condor cubs have survived the fire in the past, and their parents will do their utmost to feed and care for their cubs. In recent days, GPS has confirmed that the nesting condor 550 returns to its nest, presumably to feed its chick. Also in the area of burns, an adult condor 311 was seen feeding on a sea lion, so that's encouraging news! Sorry, no new information about Iniko's status, we hope to learn more by the end of the week.... read more
28.8 UPDATING Ventana Wildlife SOCIETY Hi everyone, The support was incredible and it really boosted our moods, BIG thank you all. Unfortunately, we have just confirmed that all structures have been lost in the condor shrine in Big Sur. Losses include a condor release device, a cabin, a workshop, a building offering basic accommodation for workers, all solar energy, and all Explore.org cameras and related equipment. Although the money losses are depressing, we still perform the most important task of counting all the condors that were on their way to the Dolan fire. Access was very limited in and around the fire, but we proceeded slowly and were lucky enough to find more... read more
Update 21.8 Ventana Wildlife Society The Dolan fire in Big Sur, California burned through the Condor Sanctuary, jeopardizing Ventana Wildlife Society's efforts to restore condors. The devastation of the shrine was recorded by two live cameras operated by Explore.org. The nest camera, where wild parents Redwood Queen and Kingpin are raising the young "Iniko", was lost on the evening of August 20, 2020, and Sanctuary Cam with an overview of the release area was burned around 3: 45:00 on August 21.8st. Our release station was absorbed in flames just before the source was switched off. With condors and their chickens surviving the fire in the past, there is still hope for Iniko and others. Once it... read more
21.8 Ventana Wildlife Society Update - Iniko 1108, 20/20/20 Hi viewers, unfortunately we lost our signal to the camera in the nest as the fire rushed. Most likely, the cable to the nest melted on the ground near the base of the redwood tree. We knew it would be sensitive to flames, and we think it could burn as the fire crept down the hill. We walk to the nest to confirm that the young Iniko is OK as soon as the firefighters consider it safe. The nesting canyon will probably catch fire, so we have to be careful before we go there. Many thanks for the amazing support... read more
20.8 UPDATES - Ventana Wildlife Society Iniko Update - 11:20 AM PST, August 20, 2020 Hello everyone, Iniko looks good. However, the fire still has to burn through the nest area, so keep your fingers crossed, but the flames come low and slow and Iniko remains protected in the redwood nest cavity. Redwoods are highly fire resistant, so we hope they protect our little friend. This morning, a layer of fog moved to help slow down the fire. As the fire approaches and burns the cables to the camera, we'll probably lose the connection. Send good thoughts! Update Dolan's Fire - 0730 AM PST August 20, 2020 Hello everyone, our heart is just right... read more

Ventana Wildlife Society Update
Cam Condor, run by Explore.org, has been a huge benefit to our field team and community. It was a way to monitor condors remotely and safely, and now during Dolan's fire it served as an early warning system for friends and neighbors and provided assistance to firefighters. Our thoughts and prayers go to them and those who are endangered by fire and condors.
No news of what the condors were doing, but for now, even though the fire was burning in the background this morning, they were at the Sanctuary's sanctuary, drinking from a spring. We work as usual!
17.8 - 19:00 CET Dad Kingpin # 167 flew in to feed Conika Inika, then they licked beautifully in the nest
Hello Petro. I saw the footage, so I wonder if it was a kind of reassuring the young from the impending danger of fire. The animals sense this and write above that the fire was spotted near the area the very next day. It is always a tragedy for all living things. 🙁
Hello Marcelo, do you mean licking and cuddling? That's what condors do normally.
Yes, I thought so. I haven't seen it with them yet. I'm glad 🙂, I was afraid they said goodbye… All they have to do is wish them good luck.
Dear Petro, one more question today, if you don't mind. There was a little condor on camera 1 and now about 13. 48 our time is there an egg from which something is clubbing? When I drive back on the bar a few minutes, the little one is still there. Did they change eggs there or am I wrong? If they put another egg, what about the collected condor? Am I confused or am I wrong with the recording on the camera?
Beautiful afternoon Marcelo, just ask 🙂 The camera is powered by solar panels and has no night vision. We are now 14:45 in California, it is 05:45 and it is still dark there, but the camera is already broadcasting online. At night, they are on camera because it does not broadcast online to see the records of the nest. Such a small tool - if LIVECAM HIGHLIGHTS is written in the left corner of the camera, it is a recording.
They will not remove the young condor from the nest, he would only have to be injured in some way for the ornithologists to interfere with the nest.
Have a nice evening, Petro. Thank you very much for the explanation. I noticed the sign several times, now I know it's a record, I'll get better acquainted. I have to laugh at myself, what a mess I made 🙂 🙂
You're welcome, I also had no idea at the beginning why the sign is there "Nice evening"

Camera from nest of condors is back and Redwood Queen and Kingpin have egg. Redwood Queen laid her eggs on February 29, 2020. and for the next eight months (hopefully!) Viewers around the world will be able to watch in real time. At the same time, you can watch the pair and their eggs from outside the nest cavity for the first time and admire the splendor of this massive redwood tree. In a few weeks, we turn on another camera inside the nest cavity, giving you amazing detail. Condor Cam is provided by Explore.org
