Eagle's Nest Big Bear - description
The non-profit organization Institute for Wildlife Studies installed the camera in the Bear Valley a few years ago.
They kept the camera and transmission without the eagles using this nest.
In the autumn of 2017, a young, inexperienced eagle couple began to appear here.
In 2017, Jackie and Mr. B took over the nest. In 2017, Jackie and Mr. B mated, but Jackie did not lay eggs. Given that she was only 5 years old (determined by her feather color pattern), she may have been too young.
But in 2018 Jackie laid eggs that hatched and were named Stormy and BBB. The BBB did not survive a severe 24-hour rainstorm and subsequent freezing temperatures. Stormy survived. When Stormy was almost 8 weeks old, he was ringed on each ankle. Stormy's identification ring is purple with the number JR1.
In 2019 the female laid two eggs, survived one chick named Simba. Simby identification ring is blue ZR1.
Nesting 2020
This year the female Jackie has laid two eggs. The first egg was laid on 8.11, the second three days later on 11.1. Expected hatching is around Valentine's Day 14.2
The Big Bear Lake is a reservoir
in San Bernardino Mountains, San Bernardino County,
in the state of California, USA.
The lake was named after the grizzly bears that were together
with indigenous peoples of the region.
It belongs to the Santa Ana River Basin. The surrounding area is a popular holiday destination.

27.11. 13: 13 nest is snowy again and still snowing
…… a pěkný vichr 🙁
Today they predicted a snow storm 🙁
26.11.19 A zase ta spadlá kamera 🙁 ! V 7,54 přilétá jeden z orlů (S.?) s větví a je pořádně zadýchaný. O minutu později je tu druhý (J.?) s větví a je na tom stejně. Vypadá to, že letěli s „materiálem“ z větší vzdálenosti. A hned je tu zobákování, ale bohužel to nejlepší nevidíme – hlavy jsou mimo kameru :-(.
Later they returned to the nest at 10,55 and 12,52.

23.11. 9:22 společný zápas s větví těsně před kamerou. 9:48 zvedli kameru…
23-11-2019 Asi je nějaký problém s kamerou : od čtvrtka je kamera trochu skloněná, včera odpoledne se trochu zvedla, ale ještě ne do původní polohy. Za nočního režimu to bylo stejné, až do 4,20 hod – to se přenos zasekl a pak naskočil až v 7,47 v denním režimu a kamera byla opět skloněná :-).

22-11-2019 The snow is almost gone and the eagles have rushed to work. Pity of this moving camera 🙁.
22.11. 8: 50 Jackie arrived with a big branch and tried to get her into the nest over 40 min. 12: 18 arrives Shadow with a branch, followed by Jackie in 12: 22 and continues the fight with a disobedient branch.
Orli byli ještě na hnízdě od 16,39 do 16,50 – trochu porovnali větve, zalaškovali si a v 16,50 oba „zadním vchodem“ zmizeli. Kamera už se trochu zvedla, ale ještě nějaké centimetry chybí, což je ještě dost znát, když se J+S na hnízdě napřímí.

To je pěkný – díky ! Tak se nám přenos nějak „kousnul“. Ještě před půlnocí SEČ to běželo.

19-11-2019 Zatím byli orli na hnízdě v časovém rozpětí 7,33 – 7,55. Pilně pracovali, jak jinak 🙂 .
Now is 15,20 and the eagles nowhere. It blows enough, but the temperature should be very pleasant.
The eagles eventually before 16. they arrived, compared branches and left the nest in 16,44.
17.11, 6:55 už zase došlo k zobákování, dneska si začíná Shadow. Kdyby raději udělali pořádek v té haldě klacků, které navršili na přední část hnízda. Teď už mají problém se dostat k přední odletové větvi…

Hello Mrs. Leona, in 15: 40 it was really Jackie and you're right with that lining, but I think they still have time for it. In 2017, when Jackie was still nesting with Mr. BB, they were both probably inexperienced and brought no bedding to the nest, and Jackie lay eggs only on bare sticks. It must have been very difficult to incubate on this nest.

Já si myslím, že by měli podestýlku dávat průběžně, že má nejspíš i jiný účel, než ten „konečný“ – měkká peřinka pro vejce. Napadlo mě, že tlející tráva vydává určité teplo (?). Milda s Raimisem větve také prokládají….. L.

Dneska se J+S nějak na hnízdo nechce 🙁 a my už máme pozdní hodinu …….
Možná proto mají kulíšci takové problémy, když se pak hodně ochladí a zespodu mají malou ochranu proti chladu. Asi je to tím, že jsou rodiče hodně mladí a nezkušení a nemají tolik zkušeností. Pak se budeme zase o kulíšky bát, aby to nedopadlo, tak jako minulé hnízdící sezony, že Petro…..
He will certainly have some soft material inside the nest, folded only from branches would probably hold. Jackie and Mr. BB took over the nest, not building it. Just before the season, they added more material, like now with Shadow. The reason for death from hypothermia is that eagles, when they have down feathers, can not regulate the temperature and when exposed to rain and winter, so slightly hypothermia.

Díky za fotky – okolí člověk už „zná“, i když teď už kamera neprojíždí okolí, ale hnízdo jsem si neuměla představit.
S tím úmrtím mláďat je to hrozné. Viděla jsem to letošní …….. 🙁 Umím si představit, jak bylo tomu člověku, co je kroužkoval.
I could hardly bear it when a few weeks ago a leg with a purple ring was lying on its nest. I hope that it is already hidden under the stick :-(.

I'm so glad to talk to someone about nesting. With that rounded leg, Mrs. Leono is right, I was very sad about it and scared the sight. But perhaps it will be better and will not appear again. We will keep our fingers crossed for the eagles so that this year's nesting season runs without any major problems and we did not have to be so stressed with the monitors.

16-11-2019 Dnešní pobyt Jackie a Shadow na hnízdě začal v 6,49 a skončil v 7,46 – jeden orel odletěl, druhý přeťapal ze záběru (doleva). Byly to jako vždy krásné záběry, nejhezčí však od 7,25 – stojí za podívání 🙂 .
V 15,38 – 15,44 na větvi nad hnízdem „konkurence“ – ?
16,39 – 16,53 jeden z orlů (Jackie ?) na hnízdě, uloží větev a čeká na parťáka – za pár minut odlétá.
P.S. V 16,58 přiletěl druhý orel, porovnal větve a po dvou minutách se přemístil mimo dosah kamery, možná tam bude nocovat ……..
15-11-2019 Od 7,00 do 8,33 orli na hnízdě – budují a „zobákují“ 🙂 .
They are an amazing pair of eagles, their mutual nudging and pecking is often quite comical, but their strong emotional attachment

14/15-11-2019 Jackie i Shadow přiletěli společně ve 14,55 hod, každý s klacíkem a pustili se do budování. Je to krása vidět orli takhle zblízka – z očí do očí :-). Jsou krásní. (v 16 hod stále na hnízdě – jeden mimo kameru)

29.10. 7:50 oba orli pilně pracují na hnízdě. Nosí samé velké větve. za chvíli bude hnízdo výš než kamera…
22-10-2019 Kolem sedmé ranní bylo pěkné sledovat zblízka jednoho z orlů – Jackie ? Pak se pustil(a) do práce na hnízdě. Nádhera.

BB Update from 16.10 This day began with a visit to an eagle perched in several of our local eagle's favorite trees. As the day progressed, we saw Jackie and Shadow fly together over the lake toward the dam and then return to their habitat. Dobrý den Ivo, není vůbec zač:) Také jsme zvědavá jak to dopadne, Shadow samičku i území hodně bránil, pokud je to opravdu pan B, myslím, že nemá šanci. V Decorah se zatím nepotvrdilo zda je to opravdu sameček DN2, no každopádně to bude ještě zajímavé….
15.10. 12: 07 landed on the nest young but colored eagle. Just behind him Jackie chased him out of the nest, but only on the branch just below the nest. In the shade you can see, apparently Shadow, who landed above the nest. 12: 26 attack an alien eagle on Shadow on the nest and then Jackie, sitting on a branch. The attacks stopped only when Jackie jumped to the male in the nest. Those were the nerves
Thanks for warning Ivo. I managed to return, it was an adult eagle. Jackie was completely confused about the attack, it could be an eagle just passing by, but it could also be a male Mr BB with whom the female had nested before Shadow.
You're right, Petra, I found Jackie very scattered. Again, I wonder why the male, if he knew her, would attack her. The intruder was circling the nest for a long time, Jackie and Shadow could shake their heads. And for a moment, Shadow tried to drive the alien eagle in the air.

10.10.19 6:30 přilétá Shadow a začíná upravovat hnízdo, 6:33 přilétá Jackie. Na hnízdě je spousta nových větví…6:37 Jackie skoro spadla na hnízdo s velkou větví a chvíli šermovala před kamerou. Stavební činnost dnes v plném proudu

Thanks Petra, I am happy that we have already released the camera and we can watch our great couple again. I do not know how to distinguish female from male, Shadow has really beautifully colored and thus complicated the resolution.
Hello Ivo, Shadow has a few brown stripes on the tail feathers. unlike a female who has pure white. There is a difference in the beak, the female has rounder nostrils, the shadow is a little curved.
